Transcript: "...there occurred violent
earthquakes and floods; and in a single
day and night of misfortune...the island
of Atlantis...disappeared into the depths
of the sea...the sea in those parts
is impassable and impenetrable, because
there is a shoal
of mud in the way."
Powerful earthquakes
destroyed the once mighty City of Atlantis.
A large portion of the farmlands sank.
The violent earthquakes generated massive
tidal waves. With devastating hydraulic
force, these tidal waves rushed inland
and flooded the entire Island of Atlantis.
The
torrential floods came from two
directions. The gigantic wall of water
from the Black Sea met the floodwaters
spilling in from the Caspian Sea, generating
a churning backlash of mud and silt,
forming mud shoals near the present
Kerch Strait region.
An inland sea,
now called the Sea of Azov, occupies
the sunken farmlands. It is a relatively
shallow sea; its maximum depth is 50
feet. Beneath the Sea of Azov, thousands
of years of accumulated alluvial silt
now cover the treasures of Atlantis.
